Get to know Kara Liane

July 16, 2018

Early this month I realized how much of my week behind-the-scenes is spent communicating with other writers. Not only do we all have different stories to share in our books, we also have different stories in our day to day lives about writing, parenthood, and how the two mix. I want you to know more about these authors because I often find myself as inspired by the path they are on as I am engaged in the books they write.

I’m thrilled to feature, Kara Liane this month. She’s a military spouse and the mom of two. Her book “A Force of Nature” is a Kindle Scout winner. The final installment in the same series, “Nursing Myself Back”, releases on Tuesday, July 17th.

Author Interview

Q: Do you remember how we “met”?
A: I had the amazing opportunity to “meet” you in Camp Nanowrimo in April since we were in the same Cabin. I’m so glad I got to participate and challenge myself to write and meet amazing writers like you along the way.

Q: Author: dream job or never expected to be doing this?
A: I have been writing since high school. I was on the school paper and wrote poetry as a hobby. I never expected to be writing novels, but this is my dream. Ever since Twilight and Fifty Shades released, I felt compelled to put pen to paper; those series sparked something in me. I’m an environmental scientist by day and living out my dream of writing by night. So, it’s the best of both worlds.

Q: Like a lot of us, your pen name drops your surname, but is Kara the writer a different persona than Kara at home?

A: Fun fact – Liane is my middle name. But I would say “Kara” is the same. My characters that I write are quirky, hopefully humorous, and charming like me, ha ha! Each character has a piece of me. When you meet me in person whether it’s “Kara the mom,” or “Kara the writer,” I’m still me. The genre I write, though, can be tricky. I’m not afraid of anyone knowing about it, I’m just respectful around people because my sons are young and they only know I write “kissing stories” lol; they’re too cute! But I love what I do and maybe one day I’ll venture into other genres, but steamy romances are my calling.

Q: Name one positive thing that you didn’t expect when you decided to publish.
A: I didn’t expect to touch some readers through the characters. I know how I feel when I read a book that evokes emotions that stay with me, but I didn’t know I could deliver that myself as a writer. Hearing that certain characters are so relatable is what compels me to keep going. I started writing just for me, but now I write for me and for my readers.

Q: “Nursing Myself Back” is the 5th and final book in A Tryst of Fate. Five books is huge for any writer, but ending series is an accomplishment in itself. How do you feel?

A: I feel torn. On one hand I’m beyond proud and thrilled it’s come to its conclusion, and I’m able to tie up loose ends. On the other hand, I’m sad because I’ve fallen in love with each couple and they’ve taken me on an intense journey the last few years. It’s hard to let that go.

Q: Plug it, girl! What do you think readers are going to love best about this book?

A: I put a lot of elements into my books. Maybe it’s too much for some readers, but I have to stay true to the characters and the way they’re meant to be written. Laced throughout my books you’ll find the romance, heart, and the HEAT, but you’ll also find touches of whimsy and humor. I think I can uniquely combine all these elements to make the story work. It’s my signature style and one that I’m proud to deliver to readers. This book (Nursing Myself Back) is special because Liz is so different from all the other characters in the other stories and I really challenged myself to get her personality just right.

Q: If you could spend a day as Liz or Caleb whose shoes would you want to fill?
A: I’d love to be Caleb. I think because I’m such a nerd and consider myself a sweet person, he’s like the male version of me. I think it would be fun to be a dude for one day, ha ha. Also, I think with him being a lawyer and practicing domestic litigation, he helps people take the necessary steps to change the course of people’s futures; which is an awesome occupation. I thought about going to law school at one point, but ended up in the science field (I have no idea how that happened because I’m not a math or science buff).

Q: With your books you’re raising awareness for PTSD and TBI. When did your heart wrap around this cause?
A: My husband has been on seven deployments and has served for over 17 years in the military. He inspires me each and every day. We give back to the community when and where we can. I felt driven to help our veterans because they serve, protect, and go out there each and every day in the trenches. The vets that are retired and/or wounded still serve in some capacity, and they deserve all of our praise, thanks, and acknowledgement. I found a way to pair my literary world with my life as a military spouse and veteran supporter. I hope to raise awareness and money for our vets and long after my husband retires, you can bet I’ll still be out there doing what I can for our heroes.

Q: What’s your favorite social media (FB, Twit, IG, Pinterest, etc…)
A: Facebook is what I’m on the most. I admit that I may have accounts on other social media platforms, but I’m not quite as active. I have more followers/interaction on Facebook than anywhere.

Q: Mama Question! How did you react when you found out you were expecting twins?
A: There’s a scene I’ve written where the character finds out she’s expecting twins. How she finds out is exactly how I found out. You’re almost in a state of shock and disbelief because you think “surely the doctor made a mistake.” The birth of my boys is thanks to modern medicine and science; I never expected to have them in the first place. The fact that I had two is a miracle. My boys have changed my life and they also inspire me to pursue my dreams. I want them to see that no matter what life throws at you, you can make it happen if you have determination.

Thanks for the interview!
