I walked away from writing this romance

ree

Since I started writing about Rae Lee and Anson solving cold cases, it’s not uncommon for me to say things out loud that are extremely unlike me.

For instance, as we drive through Uwharrie National Forest, I’ll often point out the car window and joke…

“That’s a really good place to hide a dead body.”

I actually get most of my ideas for these characters riding in the car while we’re adventuring between Raleigh and Charlotte. So if you’re from North Carolina, and recognize some of the fictionalized places I’ve written about in the other Shattered Hearts of Carolina books, you will love the road trip that Rae Lee and Anson take in Mend My Soul!

However, I got really stuck on the black moment in this book. I had two options:

  1. Stare at my computer screen, depressed.

  2. Open the freezer to see if there’s anything worth making for dinner and play the part of the good mom who hadn’t been ignoring feeding her family for two weeks.

I chose option two.

But unfortunately(?) my husband—aware of what I was writing while I was unaware that he was scrolling for episodes of The Dead Files he hadn’t seen—had stopped on an episode preview.

So when I walked past the television, one word the paranormal investigators said jumped out at me. My writer brain took over quicker than Rae Lee’s psychic instincts.

I turned around, went back to my office, and wrote the entire chapter.

Excited to find out what happens?
